Support both parents and students to provide every child with the opportunity to excel.

About Us

The directors Libby Johnson and Helen Ainsworth had such wonderful memories of their dance schools and the huge part they played in their childhood. It wasn’t uncommon for them from about 12 years upwards to be spending over 20 hours a week dancing, assisting with teaching, doing class or competing as well participating in festivals, exams, and performances. By opening The National Ballet Studio (TNBS) they aimed to create this in Dubai.

Libby and Helen recall how their parents were amazing at paying for everything and driving them everywhere. Helen herself as three young children and knows that the timetabling of activities and the added costs can be very challenging so it is something they bare in at all times.

TNBS provides classes in: ballet (child and adult levels), tap (child and adult levels), modern, street jazz, and contemporary, drama and Irish.

The first studio to open was Jumeriah Islands club (JIC) in September of 2013. The venue with its gorgeous views of the lake and skyline of Dubai as well as ample parking for parents and a great café to while away the time your children are dancing made it a perfect HQ for TNBS.

Since then TNBS has expanded to Emirates Golf Club with equally beautiful facilities for students and parents and from September 2014 TNBS was able to run classes from Dubai British Foundation. A wonderful studio where TNBS hold their annual RAD and ISTD exams.

From September 2015 TNBS will be running classes from Dubai British School in Jumeirah Park, yet another fantastic and convenient location for parents to bring their children to. DBS JP is also large enough to allow the school to run classes in two studios simultaneously, thus providing yet further opportunities for TNBS students to attend as many classes as possible.

“I always had a keen interest in teaching and child development. After having spent the early part of my childhood following my sisters into dance classes I was eager to combine the two loves and make a career out of teaching dance. In 2008 I graduated from Merseyside Dance and Drama with a HND in dance education and I was a certified teacher with the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance.

“I have been dancing since I was three, and trained in Ballet, Tap, Modern and Contemporary Dance.

I won awards and scholarships for the RAD summer school, solos, festivals and The National Youth Ballet. At sixteen I won a place at Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance in London and trained there for 3 years graduating with a National Diploma in Dance and a Higher National Certificate in Dance.

During my time in Merseyside I worked for a well - known school teaching ballet, tap, modern and jazz. During this time I gained invaluable knowledge and bags of experience in entering children for both ISTD and RAD examinations. Post graduating I turned my attention to teaching full time and after a short stint of freelancing in the South West of the UK I moved to Dubai in the new year of 2009.

In Dubai I began studying with the Royal Academy of Dance and gained my Certificate in Ballet Teaching Studies with them in September 2011. Since being in Dubai I have taught a range of subjects including Tap, Modern, Ballet, Jazz and started up a Glee Club in September 2010. I have also been an integral part in helping students gain places at full time colleges such as Tring, Laine Theatre Arts and Northern Ballet School. Throughout the 5 years I have been in Dubai I have been involved in the annual RAD and ISTD examination sessions with a 100% pass rate for all students entered.

I qualified with a ‘Professional Dancers Teaching Diploma’ from the Royal Academy of Dance in 2009 and have been teaching in Dubai since. In 2013 Libby and I founded The National Ballet Studio, and have many more exciting projects due to start in the coming months.”

Each year The National Ballet Studio provides its students with an opportunity to perform in the professional environment of The Madinat Theatre. The show is a visually stunning mix of all dance genres and techniques learnt by the students. The experience of performing for a live audience is invaluable. TNBS feels that it is the most important part of the year, as many of the students are training for a career in the arts. The process of preparing the show provides the students with:

• An opportunity to share and showcase their work

• A chance to develop performance skills

• An opportunity to work together as a dance company

• Experience of a professional working environment

This year we introduced a choreography competition where by senior students submitted concepts for a piece of their own and the best idea was chosen for the show.

This project enables students to gain an understanding of the hard work and imagination that goes into any artistic creation. This will be a permanent addition to the programme and submissions for next year’s gala must be in by December 2016 to info@thenationalballetstudio.com

The winner of the 2016 and making her choreographic debut is Lena Goetze. Lena was given all the responsibilities of creating a dance piece including; choreographing, teaching, rehearsing, staging, and costume and lighting designing.

Helen and Libby are very pleased with the progress of this year’s rehearsals and gala production. Building on the success of last year’s show this year promises to be bigger and better.

Much love,

Helen and Libby
